Demographic Profile

According to North Carolina State Demographics Office, as of July 1, 2005 Cumberland County has 27,332 children 5 years and younger comprising 17.9% of the total county population (305,173).

  • The county is highly diverse in terms of population ethnicity/racial composition. 45% of the population counted by the 2000 Census described themselves as being of non-European lineage.
  • The county’s Hispanic/Latino population has grown to 20,919, a 57.31% increase since 1990.
    • Minority families face ongoing challenges in securing health care, child care, adequate / affordable housing, and other family support services: language barriers, cultural differences and difficulties finding and qualifying for services are all impediments to them.

By using the American Community Survey (ACS) on the Census.gov website, we can track potential changes in demographic information between 2000, the last decennial census, and 2005. "Data from the American Community Survey and Census 2000 Supplementary Survey are collected from a sample of housing units and used to produce estimates of the actual figures that would have been obtained by interviewing the entire population using the same methodology."
